Nursing outcome:
Catheter Acquired Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI)
Choose a nursing-sensitive quality outcome core measure that is monitored and reported for nursing quality outcomes from a healthcare facility or web resource of your choosing. Core measures that are impacted by the quality of nursing care can be found in multiple sources, but two of the most common are The Joint Commission and CMS.gov. CMS core measures are publicly reported and you may be able to find reported core measures for your own organization by going to CMS.gov and looking for the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers & Systems (CAHPS)Links to an external site. to compare feedback from patients or to compare quality outcomes reported by various organizations go to Hospital Quality Initiative Public ReportingLinks to an external site.. A measure is “nursing-sensitive” when the safety and quality of care experienced by a patient is directly impacted by the care of nursing professionals in various organizations.
The Join Commission

The ANA

When you choose a core measure(CAUTI), choose one for which your organization has a nursing policy and/or procedure or other guidelines. It is preferable that you investigate the guidelines in your current place of work. However, you may substitute a protocol found online as well. The protocol should be from a professional nursing organization or source of guidelines that nurses may reference.  Nursing Quality Outcomes with reported core measures that are monitored and reported are typically addressed in Nursing Policy and Procedures, Nursing Procedural Guidelines or Protocols, or other online or paper documents accessible to all nursing staff.
Once you have chosen the nursing-sensitive quality core measure and your related organizational guideline, address the following points for your paper (address each point
clearly using APA formatted headings and well-formed paragraphs):
Identify the core measure and summarize the nursing-sensitive quality measure. (One paragraph: Name of measure, definition, history, impact on the patient and the institution, how nursing care impacts the outcome, etc.)
Identify your institutional guideline used to address the measure.
Evaluate the methods used to develop the guideline. (One paragraph: who, what, when, how, etc.)
Evaluate the quality of the evidence upon which the recommendations are based. (Two plus paragraphs: Include a summary of the quality of sources listed. Are they high-level research articles? Professional organizations? Manufacturer guidelines? Are the sources up to date? Are the sources providing unbiased recommendations? Are URLs working? If printed books, web resources, or other secondary sources are referenced, do nurses have access? Etc.)
You may find it helpful to reference the *JHEBP tools, particularly Appendices E and F, when completing this portion of your evaluation.
Conduct a search for the most recent knowledge available to you on this core measure. (Include at least three peer-reviewed high-quality research articles from the Regent Online Library with DOIs) and summarize the current evidence on your chosen core measure. (Two or more paragraphs: Include analysis and synthesis of the research you discovered on the core measure utilizing the Regent online library.
In addition to the scholarly references, find at least one professional organization that creates protocols or guidelines related to your core measure. Examples are (What is your evaluation of the information provided? Is it up to date? Is it referenced by your organization? Does it align with the research you found?)
Be sure to identify if any new primary research and/or professional organization recommendations add to, change, or detract procedures from your existing organizational guideline (increased evidence, contrary evidence, no further evidence).
Note: At least four of your resources for this paper will address your search for the most up-to-date resources available for your nursing-sensitive core measure.
Discuss what practice change(s), if any, should be initiated due to the guideline. (at least one paragraph)
Analyze the ethical implications along with your Christian/Biblical worldview applicable to this topic.
