About me:
– Was a nurse extern for a year after nursing school where I was able to jump around and assume the role of a nurse in various units: postpartum, neurology unit, cardiology/telemetry unit.
– Worked in a dialysis center for 6 months before switching over to a general medicine & telemetry unit where I have been for the past 9 months.
– Fell in love with nursing because I love jobs that allow me to build rapport with people. Throughout my life I worked as afterschool and summer camp counselors where I grew close with both the children & their families. Which led to many of them hiring me as a sitter and nanny.
Was a nanny for many years and specifically cared for 3 families from 2006 to 2015. The level of trust people must have to care for their children at the level I did I was able to earn and keep for over a decade with the children. They became older teenagers and found it hard to let me go and I found it hard to let them go as well.
– I wanted to go into nursing because I enjoy getting to know & care for people, especially during times they’re under a lot of distress. Being at the bedside during the covid pandemic has been both emotionally challenging but rewarding as well. I have never had to be the one to face families who suddenly lost loved ones until now.
Though its hard, I’ve learned to be able to extend the same love & compassion I showed patients to their families during such times and although I cant bring their loved ones back—I appreciate the fact that they are confiding in me. (please add more substance)
– Becoming a fnp will give me more autonomy and more time to build rapport and actually focus on a person long term as opposed to only during 12 hr shifts which is my goal.
Nursing has opened my eyes into becoming more health conscious especially for myself and I want to encourage that. I believe taking an upstream approach to healthcare will be beneficial for people long term. My primary doctor & my NP are some of the best around and they check up on me regularly.
I know how that makes me feel and I want to be able to provide that to patients as well and help them stay on track. I also want to help those like the elderly and the underserved population who need more supervision, guidance, & help with their healthcare needs. Working in the dialysis center on the southside of chicago, I worked with the underserved population and unfortunately its obvious that they need more insight and information into their health challenges.
They dont get any alone time with providers, they linked to a machine for 3-4hrs in a room full of other patients. Providers walk around and have 5 minute conversations with each patient in public theres no privacy.
I noticed that a lot of the patients have other health challenges besides kidney injuries and diseases that dont get addressed due to such things like: low income, lack of insurance, language barriers, learning barriers that were never addressed, etc. (please add more substance)
