NURS 343 DRUG CLASS TABLE DIRECTIONS AND RUBRIC Over the course of the semester

April 4, 2024

NURS 343 DRUG CLASS TABLE DIRECTIONS AND RUBRIC

Over the course of the semester, you will be making a drug table that lists the classes of drugs that you will learn about this semester. The purpose of this table is for you to organize your notes into highlights or bullet points of information. All the information in the table should be in your own words. Do NOT copy and paste. This table should be a review of your notes-you do not need multiple sources for this table, you are summarizing the information that we cover in class.

For every drug table, choose five (5) drugs in different classes if possible and follow the steps below.

For drug class, please include therapeutic category-physiological change caused by the medication (ex: anti-hypertensives), and by their pharmacologic category-how the drug works (ex: Beta blocker, ACE inhibitor). See the example below for details:

Drug Name (Generic/Brand)/Route/ Class

Indication

Mechanism of Action

Side Effects/Adverse Reaction

Patient Education

Nursing Considerations

Source

(Author, date, p)

Include brand name, generic name, routes available, and class(es) of drug

What conditions are treated by this medication?

How does it work in the body? Use your own words and don’t get too technical.

List 3-5 major side effects (what could cause permanent harm or death or the most common side effects (nausea, vomiting…)

What does the patient need to know about taking this medication? Examples: What time of day should it be taken? Should they take it with or without food? For how long?

What does the nurse need to know about this medication? Are there assessments that must be done prior to giving? Labs to monitor? If so, why? Example: for thiazide diuretics-these cause potassium loss, and potassium needs to be monitored.

If you just put “monitor electrolytes”, you will not be able to answer a test question that asks specifically about which electrolyte is altered with this medication.

Brand name: does not have brand name

Generic: hydrochlorothiazide

Route: PO

Class: thiazide diuretic, anti-hypertensive

Hypertension, heart failure, fluid overload

Interferes with absorption of sodium ions (salt) in the renal tubule which increases excretion of water, Na, Cl, K. Decreases cardiac output and fluid volume

Hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, dizziness

Take with food or milk to prevent stomach upset, take when first waking, check bp regularly, monitor blood glucose

Assess BP before giving. Baseline and periodic renal function, electrolytes-especially K+, blood glucose

If there is no information to put in a box, put N/A.

You do not need to use APA format here, but there needs to be a citation as to where you got the information. If you got the information from class, just put class and the date.

You may add more lines whenever needed. You may do the table in Word or Excel. It is recommended to copy the headings from the first line of the table onto the top of every page so that it is easy for you to follow as you work through the table.

You may color code and use different fonts, etc., to make information stand out.

This is NOT a group project
