Social/Emotional Development Section (45 points)
K-5th grade (5-11 years)
1. Describe known characteristics of the child’s family or home context (caregivers, number of siblings, lifestyle, relationships with family members, level of parent involvement in school, etc.). How does the child’s family context influence him/her in the school setting?
2. Describe the child’s overall temperament. Include at least 6 of the 9 temperament traits we discussed in class (Activity level, rhythmicity, distractibility, approach/withdrawal, adaptability, attention span/persistence, threshold of responsiveness, intensity of reaction, and quality of mood), and provide supporting evidence from your observations.
3. Describe the child’s self-concept. How does the child describe and perceive him-/herself? Observe the child in the classroom setting in academic work and social contexts, and you may also ask the child how they would describe themselves to someone else. Does the child see him-/herself as capable and competent in the classroom? If you obtained the student’s self-report, does it align with the perceptions they exhibit in the classroom? Provide supporting evidence from your observations.
4. How does the child express or articulate and regulate his/her own emotions, and how much does the child appear to understand about emotions? Provide supporting examples.
5. Does the child display empathy or prosocial behavior toward others? Is s/he able to take the perspective of others? Provide supporting examples.
6. What socialization strategies were used by the teacher and/or parent (verbal instruction of right and wrong, modeling, reinforcement, punishment, etc.) to teach and reinforce moral and prosocial behavior? Does the child respond better to certain types?
7. Describe the child’s social interactions with peers. Does the child appear to have positive or negative social patterns? Describe examples of each of these types of behaviors.
