Five Basic Principles of an Essay or Research Paper:
Note: Each principle or stage is marked by a verb in italics that initiates each step.
1. Thesis: Provide your audience/reader with a clear statement indicating the major theme and/or concern of the paper. This does not have to be an exact statement especially considering that a thesis statement is often revised to more accurately reflect the developing body of the paper, which, itself, is constantly changing in light of new research and information; hence the work is constantly being updated, revised, etc. There is, briefly, a continuous tweaking and/or balancing between the thesis statement and the body of the paper so that they eventually harmonize, reflect and reinforce one another. The initial thesis statement should nonetheless indicate the general direction of the paper.
2. Body of Support Section: Establish Preliminary, Essential Terms, Concepts, Definitions and History – so as to prepare and/or acquaint the audience/reader with critical background information, i.e., clarifying key concepts, definitions, semantics and context, in advance. This process can be referred to as [grounding both the text and reader.]
3. Body of Support Section: Develop the main argument and corresponding ideas and theory by way of expository. Include necessary descriptions, exemplifications and/or illustrations, comparisons and contrasts and intelligent/clarifying metaphors; appeal to prior definitions, established context, research, and/or, authoritative works and references.
4. Body of Support Section: [Now] Support your argument with clear examples and additional authoritative references, supportive content and clarifying detail by way of additional proofs, metaphors and illustrations. Demonstrate your working knowledge of your subject-matter, and, logic. Make the necessary stylistic and rhetorical appeals. This is where your reinforcing, strengthening and solidifying – bolstering – your case and argument. Furthermore, if reason dictates the need to make concessions, then do so. [Never be afraid to admit and/or concede the strengths or valid arguments of an opposing view. This is what scholars and fair-minded academics do.]
5. Conclusion: Unify the thesis: Bring it all together by summarizing the entire body of work so as to reinforce the thesis and/or main argument in a clear, sequential manner; again, clarifying the significant points, stating the implications, [What does all this mean; Why should we care or pay attention?] and making the relevant connections pursuant to the reaffirmation of the initial thesis statement. The objective, briefly, is to come full circle.
