My Topic: how to butcher a store bought chicken

First create an introduction that will be a part of your outline.
One of the most important parts of your speech is your introduction. A well planned and presented introduction can set the tone and elevate your confidence level for your whole speech.

The first sentence should NEVER be “Today I am talking about _____.” NO!!!!!! You must start with an engaging sentence, story, quote, or question to the audience. On the speech rubric (I recommend printing it out and using it as a checklist), there are four things you need to accomplish in your introduction:

1. Grab the attention of the audience

2. Establish your credibility (clearly state what experience, education or training you have had with the topic),

3. Explain how your topic relates to the audience (why they should listen or what they can get out of it)

4. Preview your topic and clearly state/list your main points.

Finally, here is what you write for this Discussion post:

Name your “how-to” topic (once a topic is taken, no one else can speak about it, so you can see all posts immediately this week) and write out what you plan to say or do to accomplish the four objectives of the introduction. Keep in mind this is a how-to speech from 4-6 minutes. You must speak for at least four and end by seven.

The introduction is the first part of your outline, below are the details on how to complete the outline.
Informative/ Demo Speech
The focus of this speech is on the showing and explaining the process in a clear concise manner. Do not use overly technical words as your audience may not know what you are talking about.

I want you to try to condense your topic into THREE Main Points which you will be discussing and showing us in detail. For example, if I were to give a speech on how to make Carrot Cookies, my main points would be something like:

1) The ingredients needed for the cookies.2) The utensils/bakeware needed in order to put the ingredients together.3) Step by directions for making these delicious cookies. I would have the items organized on the counter, but if not, you could show pictures like those in the powerpoint below. BUT, we need to see YOU the whole time, so a large monitor would have to be next to you.

Check out pages 332-336 for tips on creating outlines. Below is an example. Please use this as a template for you to follow.

Demonstration Speech Outline Example

Name: Good Student

Date: 11/4/18

Class: Com 100

Section #: 18457 or 18578

Introduction:

Everyone has them. Sometimes people work hard to create and maintain them. Sometimes they

come about quite by accident. Regardless of where you grew up or where you live now, you

have them. I’m talking about family traditions. They are the things that bind families together

and help create shared memories of specific events. More often than not, there is one element

that we associate with each and every family tradition: FOOD! (attention getter and audience

message). Most families have specific foods that are served at nearly every family gathering.

We often look forward to family events partly because we know that certain foods will be

served. (Of course, we may also dread a family gathering because we know that certain foods

will be served!) My family is like so many others in this respect. When my family gets together

we almost always have food. This is always cause to rejoice because both of my parents are

amazing cooks, and baking is one of their specialties. One of our family’s favorite food traditions

is a recipe called Carrot Cookies, which I would like to share with you today. I have been making Carrot

Cookies for 10 years (credibility statement). I will begin by telling you which ingredients are needed, the supplies you need, and the steps for how to prepare a batch of Carrot Cookies, and then I will tell you what goes well with them. (preview).

Main Points:

The ingredients that should be gathered before you begin to make Carrot Cookies. (bettycrocker.com)
The supplies and time you need. (healthy cooking.com)
The steps you will need to take to create your own batch of Carrot Cookies.
Conclusion:

Now you know the ingredients and supplies you will need, as well as the steps necessary to make a batch of

Carrot Cookies. I hope you can try this recipe and see why they are such a family favorite. (review main points). It is astounding to realize that countless family memories are related to this one recipe alone. I love having that shared history with my children, my siblings, and my parents. In fact, our most recent family

project involved typing and laminating all of our family recipes. What family food traditions

does your family have? Can you prepare these favorite family meals yourself? If not, I

challenge you to add Carrot Cookies so you can share this treat with future generations.

(memorable good close).

You can use information from peer reviewed articles, news sources, credible websites, etc. Please make sure you state the name of the author and the organization in your speech.
