Instructions
Adapted from Graham, E. E., & Mazer, J. P. (2011). The interpersonal competence development project: The intersection of theory and practice. Communication Teacher, 25(3), 159–165.
Develop a specific action plan to enhance your interpersonal competence as a leader. The following steps provide the guidelines you need to complete the final paper, due at the end of the course. The project is intended to stretch for the duration of the course so that you have time to research a target skill area, implement your action plan & reflect on your progress.
Skills Assessment (1 page)
Explain which skill you chose to target in your efforts to become more effective in your interpersonal management. Describe your rationale for choosing to focus on this skill.
What feedback did you receive that motivated you to target this skill?
How will personal growth in this area impact your relationship with others?
How will greater development impact team or organizational dynamics?
Literature Review (4 pages)
Identify relevant research on the skill you have selected by finding articles or books that discuss this skill or strategies for skill development (4–5 sources, 2 of which are academic journal articles).
Using correct APA citation, summarize a few key themes from the research to describe recommendations from experts
As you write this section, do not include your opinion because the goal is to report on the research that others have done on this topic
Action & Evaluation Plan (1 page)
Explain the specific growth strategies that you experimented with during weeks 5, 6 & 7 of this course & describe what efforts you took to measure your growth in your chosen skill area.
How will you know when you are successful?
What resources will you use to help ensure growth & development? For example, will you seek feedback from a friend?  Will you keep a journal or use another form of personal reflection?
What is your plan to recover from failure?
Results (2 pages)
Describe specific, clear examples that demonstrate both your success & failure when applying your growth strategies in weeks 5, 6 & 7 of this course.  Explain how any increases in effectiveness have impacted your relationships with others, or your contributions to your work (or ministry) team or organization.  If you do not see any impact on others, explain why.
Identify any challenges you experienced in this process & consider why you encountered resistance. Explain how you overcame challenges, and/or times when you failed to do so
Evaluate the strategies you used in your action & evaluation plan. Did these prove to be effective; why or why not?  What would you change or do differently moving forward?
Did you see any unexpected results & if so, what were those?
Conclusion & Recommendations (1 page)
Summarize your experience & address the following questions in your summary
In what ways did you meet your goal for improving this skill?
What is your next step in improving this skill to improve your leadership of others?
What recommendations or reflections do you have to add to the scholarly literature about developing this skill? Did your findings confirm or negate what you read in your research?  [Be sure to address this question with careful thought & detail]
Assignment Criteria
Your paper should be 8–10 pages describing all of the steps listed above
Your paper should be typed & double–spaced, one–inch margins & 12–point font
Format your reference list & internal citations in the body of the paper using APA formatting
