My senior thesis focuses on how the mixed reaction by communications/phycology scholars like (Chris Ferguson, Brad Bushman, and Craig Anderson) created unrest about the variety of other contributing factors that relate to increased violence. Following violent events like school shootings attributing cause to playing a violent game is an easy accusation because most school shooters are young white males.
Blaming violent games as creating school shooters took away from the research and study behind actual risk factors that contribute to increase violence like school shootings. The main argument behind the variety of academia/scholars is that violent video games are not a causal factor for immediate violence but rather a correlation factor, amongst all of the real causes to actual causes to violence like (access to guns, gun control, mental healthcare, detection, preparedness. (violent games do not cause school shootings, not a casual factor, but is a correlational factor, among many other internal, external, and profiling by academics versus news media.
Following major violent events like school shootings or releases of violent games, it caused many opposing reactions between scholars which brought upon unrest rather than a consensus on the facts behind violent games and making informaed change on how to prevent increases in violence, detecting violent warning signs, emergency preparedness, addressing actual causes and a means to counter-act actual violence, and not assumptions around what could be causing people to go out and shoot people, like a video game. and the public on what is causing, and how to properly address this issue.
Facts and speculations by news media between violence, gaming, and shootings has created discrepancies (tone, description, word-choice) between the media, health/gov. institutions, and rightful public response/opinion. The reaction and emphasis of violence in gaming, shooter profile, and information about their affiliations issue caused a sense of ambiguity or unrest. The lit review should overview the variety of research, facts, data, terms around in the academic journals. And then the rest of the paper is how the news media frames the issue that researchers presented/systhesis. Please do not write definitions of what each section should be, I am using grounded/thematic analysis…
