You will need to identify 3-5 quality literature sources related to the research group and related topics/concepts, read and summarize these sources, identify themes within the literature, and then write a report that summarizes this information.
First, you should start by listing and identifying potential key words and topic terms that could be used to conduct literature searches. After narrowing this list to the most important terms, you should conduct literature searches using the IUK Library for quality social science sources related to your topic. To help guide your research, visit the IUK library and IUK Library Sociology Libguide. The sociology Libguide provides several helpful videos for identifying quality sources as well as several search tools for finding sources in the social sciences and sociology.
Once you have conducted searches and found related literature to the topic you will need to select a minimum of three sources that are directly related to the research project group, topics, or concepts. The focus should be placed on sociology or social science sources.
Remember the goal is for the sources to relate to your chosen group of people and what they do online, not necessarily provide analysis of the groups topic. For example, if the research topic is “communities of people who are fans of the Boston Red Sox” then the focus of the literature review should be on fan groups behave, baseball fan groups, the importance of sports fandom, social benefits of sports and sports fandom, etc. and not a detailed history of facts about the Red Sox baseball team. The focus of the study is the community of fans not the Red Sox team.
Next, you should read the sources you identified and then compare the sources’ findings to identify common themes or findings in the literature.
Then, write a report that includes the following:
Description of the major themes within the literature. This should include a summary of topics or findings that the articles have in common and how these themes could relate to the classes topic. This section should discuss at least three themes but may include more depending on the topic and literature found by the team. (I suggest making each “theme” a heading in the report to help organize your thoughts). For each theme you should describe it in your own words and then provide examples of it directly from the sources you found. These examples can be summaries in your own words or when necessary direct quotes from the articles.
Description of the strengths of the existing literature. This should include a summary by the team of what the combined literature sources you found did well in your groups opinion. This could include topics or points that are covered well by the literature, interesting findings, etc.
Description of the limitations/weaknesses of the existing literature. This should include a summary by the team of what the combined literature sources you found did not do well or failed to address at all. This could include missing points or topics, claims made with limited evidence, etc.
Summary of how you believe the literature relates to your research questions, including how it could help you predict your answers.
When writing your report, be sure to:
Include an introduction and conclusion that summarizes your arguments.
Feel free to write from the collective “we”. (“We are going to study…” or “We found that that…”)
Avoid using bullet points or including the questions in the essay. Instead just write the paper as a cohesive essay that addresses the component parts above
Utilize headings to organize the paper.
Be sure to cite all sources. You should include a reference page and in-text citations using the American Sociological Association (ASA) format to properly cite all sources. See the follow links for additional information for ASA formatting:
Be sure to utilize course readings and other relevant scholarly writing to support your answers. You should also include a reference page and in-text citations using the American Sociological Association (ASA) format to properly cite all sources. After completing this report you will need to submit the report in canvas.
