Design History Guidebook
Guidelines
Create a visual essay by combining images, graphics, and original writing.
The content of the design history guidebook addresses an aspect of 10 of the 12 weekly Lecture Topics.
The almost 200-year history of modern design is a vast field; hence the guidebook format allows each Lecture Topic to stand on its own while fitting into an overall Guidebook Theme.
Your Design Guidebook theme is open but must focus on design. For instance, your theme may be your design major or a category of a design object or a type of practice.
Explore modern design after 1851 (the date of the Great Exhibition) by examining its precedents and precursors, showing the links between contemporary practice and historical, cultural, economic, and social settings.
You will contextualise, interpret and critically analyse historical perspectives and synthesise this knowledge into a historical chronicle and personal interpretation of modern design practices, processes and/or objects.
An object in this context includes flat works such as textiles, posters, photographs; as well as, environments, systems and experiences.
Do not confuse art objects with design objects—design objects provide a service or function. Please seek clarification on your approach from your tutor.
Communication
A formal written essay format is not a requirement, consider creative approaches to the visual communication of the guidebook design.
The guidebook’s layout, design and visual communication are assessed so be creative and show some innovation. Information graphics are encouraged.
Each topic requires 300 words (+/-10%) of written analysis supported by at least two images that exemplify the discussion (e.g. contemporary and historical).
To assist the visual communication and allow flexibility of the page layout, you may break up the sentences in visually attractive ways.
Be careful with experimental layouts; the aim is to enhance the visual communication, not diminish it.
Your discussion must include authoritative research with at least one in-text reference per topic (page) and a supporting reference list in Chicago 17th B (Author-Date). All images must be captioned and referenced in the Chicago 17th B (Author-Date) referencing style.
Visual solutions to communicating concepts and comparisons are encouraged.
Maximum of two pages per topic choose ten of the twelve themes.
Research
Take notes in the weekly lectures week-by-week.
Focus on aspects from the lecture that interests you.
Review the references list on the presentation slide, check out the reading list on Blackboard and begin your own research for your theme.
Plan your strategy early and work on it week to week, do not leave it to the last minute!
Plan your design solution to the sections after each lecture while it is fresh in mind; this will give a more significant focus on each topic.
NB: Wikipedia, online blogs and online articles are not academic references.
Use only high-quality academic sources, web pages and blogs are poor quality sources. (Check with the tutor if you are unsure).
Please source all references through Curtin Library Catalogue or Google Scholar and use the referencing tools available.
Guides for Chicago 17th B referencing are available on the Curtin Library website: https://libguides.library.curtin.edu.au/chicago.
