Paper 1: Explaining the Problem

Define and explain the problem.
The goal of defining and explaining the problem is to establish the problem exists, explain the current state of the problem (including its key characteristics), explain why this problem matters (its effects), establish the relevant background and context so that the reader can fully understand the problem, explain how this problem may be relevant to the larger world, and present the variety of current perspectives on the problem. To do this, students will need to engage in research on these specific concerns and then synthesize that research into a clear, detailed explanation of the problem.
In defining and explaining the problem, students should assume that the reader of the paper knows nothing about the subject matter and it’s the writer’s job to tell them all about it. Students should focus on the characteristics and effects of the problem as it appears now and not the problems causes or past history (that will come later).
While this is an academic writing class, the paper does not necessarily need to be written in an “academic” way. The presentation of research does not need to dry and boring. As seen in the public writing we have read, important topics can be presented in a compelling way. (That said, it’s vital that the evidence be properly cited.)
Unfortunately, there are no simple models to follow. The best way to present information will depend on one’s subject problem.
Weirdly, this paper will probably be the most difficult as students are still learning about their topic and will quickly realize there are many gaps in their knowledge about the topic. Although you may experience moments of intense panic, remember that research, and consequently this paper (and the other papers in the class), is not a linear progression, but rather a serpentine, often backtracking affair. If you feel lost, that’s okay; with effort and diligence you’ll reach your destination.
