In this assignment you are going to put yourself in the shoes of a group leader who is leading the group in the ending stage. As you answer the questions make sure that your answers are thorough, especially if the question calls for description of the group process.
Answers should contain references to the text or to the video as support for your thoughts. Points will be deducted if your answer does not contain this reference.

Review the pages in Chapter 2 on the Overview of Group Leadership Skills – Select 3 skills and explain how and why you would have used the leadership skill within this group at the ending stage and who you would have used the skill with. Clearly, identify the group member(s).
The termination of a group is a particularly stressful time for the group members. How would you open the last session group session? Briefly describe what you would say in your opening statement.
Many of the group members expressed that they did not feel that they could continue their progress without the support of the group. How would you explore these feelings of the group members further? What questions would you ask?
In our video clip, Ashley is not present due to the decline of her partner’s health. Many of the group members expressed concern about her absence. Select one of the group members that expressed the concern about Ashley’s absence. Sometimes group members during the termination phase try to bring in new problems to work on. Select one of the group members and describe a new problem that they might try to bring to the last group session. As the group leader, how would you address this situation?
Often group members worry that they will have setbacks after the termination of the group. One of the important responsibilities of the group leader is to discuss with the group members how to handle setbacks after the end of the group. Suppose that Chris begins to discuss that he is worried that as his father’s health further declines his anxiety will increase again. What would you do as the group leader to address this concern and to fulfill your responsibility as a group leader to help group members process how they will handle setbacks?
In the video clip, we saw the group leader asking questions about how the group members were going to generalize the skills from the group to their daily lives. What reasons are important that we as group leaders make consolidation an important part of the final group session?
One of the situations that can occur in the final session is a group member may distance themselves. Imagine it is the final session and one of your group members is very withdrawn, has his head down and is not participating in the discussion. What would you do? Would you have other group members address this distancing as well? Why or Why Not?
It is the final few minutes of the last group session; Rue says that she has some unfinished business that she wishes to discuss. She says that while her mother is understanding of her anxiety about doing well, her father is not as understanding. She would like to process this. Remember it is the last few minutes of the final session. What do you do?
