You may use any materials we have read, watched or discussed in this class, as well as what you have learned from the films and books assigned for reaction papers, as an illustration of your point. You should not need to do additional research to write this essay. 20 pts; 20% of final grade.)
Hans Loewald: (1960): “The purpose of psychoanalysis is to turn ghosts into ancestors.”
Although Loewald was talking about psychoanalysis, you may extend this to any type of therapeutic treatment of trauma that we have discussed in this class. You may also consider whether or not you believe there are other ways, for example creative self-expression, to achieve the same goal.
2. Stephen King: “Monsters are real and ghosts are real too. They live inside of us and sometimes they win.” You may use any of King’s novels or short stories as an illustration of his point. You may also talk about King’s own trauma history and how it has impacted on his work and his life.
3. Discuss your understanding of trauma based on what you have learned in this class.
4. Discuss your understanding of the concept of dissociation, based on what you have learned in this class.
