Media Presentation – Each teacher candidate will present a short overview (15 minutes) in a small group or individually, of media related to a category of exceptionalities. A piece of literature (e.g, fiction with a character with an exceptionality, a biography or autobiography, video, etc.) will be summarized along with a discussion of how the particular media could be used in the classroom to enrich or improve the inclusion of a students with exceptionalities. Materials that could assist your present/future students in understanding the strengths and needs of peers with exceptionalities should be chosen. Your focus audience is students K-12, a presentation that focuses on your grade level of certification is good but not necessary as long as your audience is K-12. Teacher candidates are encouraged to use presentation media that creates an interesting presentation (e.g., video, podcast, Prezi, Powerpoint, etc.). Examples of media include but are not limited to: The Story of Luke, El Deafo, A book from The Lightening Thief series, Freak the Mighty, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Marcelo in the Real World, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, the Captain Underpants series, The Big Bang Theory, A book from the Joey Pigza series, A book from the Hank Zipzer series, The Here’s Hank series, The Elephant Man, movies or TV shows, etc. See rubric for grading expectations. The focus of the presentation is on how you would use the media, it is not to provide an overview of the exceptionality beyond a brief explanation if needed to clarify the use of the media. This will be presented in slide format with voice during a class session and a copy of the presentation in its entirety will be emailed to the professor.
