Mas Que Blanco, Mas Que Negro (More than White, More than Black): essay speak from an Afro-Cuban perspective on matters of race and national identity among Cubans in the United States. The situation is that you are from a family that migrated from Cuba to the US before World War II. Discuss how experience of migration and adjustment to life in the United States may or may not have been similar to Cubans who arrived in the post-WWII era. Provide your position on U.S. immigration policy and federal programs that were created for Cubans who entered between 1959 and the Mariel Boatlift. In offering your position be sure analyze the similarities and differences between the approach the U.S. government and society took towards these Cubans and what you and your family had experienced as Afro-Cubans: discuss what factors influenced official governmental policies toward those Cubans and your own experience. What political and social forces affected how your group was received and perceived in the United States? Finally, describe how your family maintained their Cuban identity and also discuss challenges that you have faced and how they were similar and/or different from the post-WWII era of Cuban arrivals to the US.
