Many schools have adopted RTI programs to assist students who struggle with reading skills. Classroom teachers are frequently called upon to implement portions of those programs within their classroom, either with the whole class or small groups.
Allocate at least 3 hours in the field to support this field experience.
Observe the student identified in Topic 3 who would benefit from Tier 2 intervention. To prepare for intervention, discuss the following with your mentor:
Program information:
What is the name of the program used in this Tier 2 intervention? (If no specific program is being used, identify a program based on your own research and answer the following questions.)
What is the structure of this program? (Is this program scripted?)
How is this program evidence-based and why is it relevant to the student receiving Tier 2 interventions?
What literacy skills are addressed in the program (phonemic awareness, decoding, reading comprehension, etc.)
Does the program have behavior interventions? If so, what are they?
Does this program target all students or a specific population such as ELL?
Student implementation information:
What is the scope and sequence for the student identified?
How many sessions and what length are the Tier 2 interventions being offered to the student? How is that determined?
How many students are in the selected student’s group and how was the grouping determined?
How often is the student being progress monitored and why?
Why is this student in a tier 2 intervention?
Does the student exhibit any behavior or social emotional issues? If so, how are they being addressed within the program?
Based on the program and student information gathered, assist your mentor in implementing intervention with the student identified in Topic 3.
Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
In 250-500 words, summarize the program and student information and reflect on the implementation of the intervention, including the differences between Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions.
APA Style is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
