For your fictitious scenario, I have purposely provided limited information so that you can be creative in the details for your scenario. You will need to “fill in the blanks” using your imagination to create a scenario in which you defend your building against the terrorist attack that is being planned. You may use an actual building where you have first-hand knowledge, or you may create your own building. In either case, you should describe your building, such as the physical design, location, characteristics, occupants, missions, etc. Additionally, you will use your imagination and creativity to describe, discuss, and/or define your scenario, to include the following: the threat(s) you will be protecting against, the critical assets within your building, the risks and vulnerabilities to those assets, the likelihood of your threat occurring, and the risk management alternatives you select to address the threat(s) and the vulnerability(s) you have identified.
You are the Corporate Security Manager of a large high-rise building in a major U.S. city. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has received information that a terrorist attack is being planned for one of the buildings in your city. Using the four basic steps of an Enterprise Security Risk Management (ESRM) program, describe in detail how you will prepare and respond to the potential threats.
As a guide, the four basic steps of an effective risk management program as outlined in chapter three of Dempsey’s Introduction to Private Security e-book are:
identification of risks or specific vulnerabilities
analysis and study of these risks to your “critical assets,” which includes the likelihood and degree of an event occurring.
optimization and selection of risk management alternatives, e.g. risk mitigation, risk elimination, risk acceptance, etc.
and the ongoing study of security programs, e.g., security technologies, emergency planning, and crisis response, etc.
Again, this is not an academic discussion. You are a Corporate Security Manager and the FBI has informed you of a potential attack against your building.
