Media has a great role in society and it influences the way we perceive childhood. As
kids
As exposed to different media, it is crucial to know by relating to this medium the reference of childhood. This paper will tackle whether media affects how kids grow up, how

children are portrayed in media, and how digital media has an effect on the way kids find it
easier to fit in. This essay is going to analyse how a number of mass media, for instance,
newspapers, television and beauty shows, mould people’s ideas about the childhood as their
age advances. The use of the digital media, the internet and smartphones have rewired the way
children become part of the society, it is not just the TV. Today, they not only learn from
schools and textbooks but also from social media and online games. Sometimes, this may help
them be more understanding with others but other times that may result in them being detached
form the society. The role of digital media in how kids socialize and why parents need to help
will be the focus of this essay topic.
Paus-Hasebrink (2019) connects socialization theory to the way media affect the
socialization process of teenagers. According to the theory, children’s growth and development
are affected by the complex relationship between their individual characteristics and the
various contexts in which they live (Paus-Hasebrink, 2019). The consumption of media is the
main factor which influence children in terms of their perception, attitudes and everyday will
participate socialization. In these days of technological development, a child is more and more
become a medium for various electronic media, such as social media and online games, and educational apps (Chassiakos et al., 2016). Providing digital platforms with social interactions
allows both opportunities and challenges for children’s social developmen 3 4
Children can connect with people in a new way using digital media, they can get
emotional and intellectual support as well as good useful knowledge (Chassiakos et al., 2016).
In such a case, social media can provide the basis for a group of people that may have flocked
together on the grounds of a common interest. Education apps and online learning resources
can serve a role by exposureing children to innovations and new knowledge and foster their
cognitive development (Chassiakos et al, 2016). Though digital media brings children to a new
milieu of their social learning, there remains a setback within this new medium. Social media
and digital networks might become a replacement for face-to-face communication (Penev &
Peneva, 2020). Furthermore, they may run the danger of being exposed to inappropriate
content, cyberbullying or online scandal which can result in their social and emotional health
(Chassiakos
et
2016)
Through the socialization theory, it is emerge that family context plays significant role
in determining children’s media use and resulting social learning (Paus Hasebrink, 2019).
Parents are playing a significant part in provision of digital media in childhood as they are the
ones who set the rules, guide and hence, foster discussions on children’s digital media
consumption (Penev & Peneva, 2020). Actual involvement of parents in their children’s media
use along with a supportive family background gives children the capacity to minimize the disadvantages that may be brought about by digital interaction (Jordan, 2004). Similarly, the
way the media choose to portray childhood affect also the process of socialization of the young
ones. The mass media and the internet platforms serve society to not only reflect opinions as
Tirocchi (2014) puts it but as well as act as a platform that constructs and legitimises these
images. Media can either offer a positive image of early years or create negative stereotypes for children, shaping their perception of self as well as imparting a range of views about social
roles.
E6
The socialization theory is based on the understanding of the multi-faceted nature of
media’s impact on children’s social adaptation may be considered a vital theory for youngsters’ social learning. The role of digital media in the socialization of children question, brings into
focus the advantages and the restrictions that such platforms. By remembering that families
have a big influence on their lives and that media shapes children’s ideas of childhood, parents,
educators and policymakers can all cooperate to form and maintain a digital environment that

is beneficial for children’s social development.
The media is an influencer of how people perceives childhood. Ecological approach
proposed by Jordan can be helpful in understanding the place that media has in children’s life.
If we consider all the components of a child’s life, we will get clearer picture of both the good
impact and bad downsides of media exposure. It is not only that the media depicts childhood
as entertainment, but it also forms, in society’s mind, the perception about the children which
seems to be true. As a result of digital media, kids now have an extra channel to study and
interconnect with a global network. They obtain behaviors from such sources as electronic
media. It is one of the most crucial things for parents, teachers, and policy makers to know how
media influence kids and they have to do their best to ensure positive impact on their growth.
It is on this that there is the need to educate them on media, put limits on screen time, and have
open discussions with them. When we acknowledge and treats, we acknowledge that media
plays a significant part in the way kids develop.

Feedback I recieved
What went well.
There are some good points here which present a solid foundation to develop your summative essay from. The resource you found about media representations of new childhoods, (Tirocchi)  should work well to help you answer the question, but you need to integrate these points more effectively. There are some good general points made in the essay, particularly about the media being positive in some ways for children, but all points need supporting with theory and evidence where possible. The points about the media as an agency of socialization are good and should be developed further.
To improve:
Try to write more formally, always use “children” and not “kids.” It is a good idea to focus on the role of the media as an agency of socialization but also it should relate to the social construction of childhood.
There is a lack of theoretical ideas. At the moment, there is not much mention of theory or evidence here as studied on the course, e.g. Palmer (toxic childhood) Postman- childhood is becoming blurred, and functionalist views- that childhood is getting better (Aries and Shorter). Marxist views could possibly be used to  evaluate. Use different theoretical arguments to structure your essay, and include a clear evaluation paragraph.
