Does your essay have the appropriate number of credible sources? Number of Sources: 4-7, academically credible
The claim of value takes a position on a topic. Your essay should take the stance you were assigned at the beginning of this unit.
SPECIFIC PARTS OF THE ESSAY:
o INTRODUCTION: The essay’s introduction includes context about the issue and concludes with a clear thesis statement / claim.
o REASONS: Each paragraph begins with one clear reason the claim is valid.
o EVIDENCE AND ANALYSIS: Evidence was strategically selected and arranged to strengthen its position with audiences. All evidence is explained.
o COUNTERARGUMENT: The essay addresses at least one possible counterargument that threatens to weaken its position and then refutes that argument.
o TRANSITIONS: Transitions are used effectively to connect ideas within and between paragraphs.
o GRAMMAR: Grammatical and punctuation errors do not impede or distract the reader from understanding the writer’s intentions.
o MLA: There are no errors in accordance with MLA style and the Works Cited is correctly formatted.
Length: 1000-1300
Number of Sources: 3-6, academically credible
Value: 10% of the class
Directions:
Different from essay 1, which asked you only to explore a topic but not take a stance on it, on essay 2 you will write an essay in which you are attempting, from the beginning, to convince a skeptical reader that your claim is convincing.
Using your topic and assigned stance on that topic, compose a strong essay arguing to convince an audience. In other words, make a claim of value and support it.
Audience:
Your audience consists of readers who may think that your topic does not matter much or who support multiple stances on your topic.
Lead up / Prewrite Assignments:
Annotated Bibliography 2: You must include 2sources. Put your sources in alphabetical order and use the citation, summary, commentary format for each entry.
Outline 2: Use the format provided later in the unit.
