mage Above:  (third from right) and other former Black Panthers along with the Brown Berets raise their fists and chant “All Power to the People” at the 50th Anniversary of the Illinois Chapter of the BPP at a West Side Health Fair in November. (https://www.gp.org/celebrating_the_founding_of_the_black_panther_partyLinks to an external site.)
For this midterm, I’m asking you to think about how the African American Movement and the Chicana/o/x Movement intersect! I’ve thought about this carefully and I wanted something that had you research a little bit to speak to the great connections that we have in our class.  Therefore:
You will be researching MISREPRESENTATIONS of the African American and Chicana/o/x community that have been produced in mainstream society.  You are more than welcome to draw from any films, cartoons, comic books, video games, ads/advertisements (magazine/ TV commercials), etc.
This midterm is broken up into 3 parts:
Part One (10 points): Misrepresentations in popular culture!
Here, I’m asking that you locate at least 2 sources for EACH community (2 for African American and 2 for Chicana/o/x) that show misrepresentations of the African American community and the Chicana/o/x community.  You are invited, as mentioned above, to draw from any sources and talk about the sources in 2 well-developed paragraphs, one well-developed paragraph for the misrepresentation of the African American community and one well-developed paragraph  misrepresentation for the Chicana/o/x community.  Please include links to the sources you’ve accessed.
Part TWO (10 points): The Music brings us together!
In this second part, I want you to research at least 3 songs created by and from the African American community and 3 songs created by and from the Chicana/o/x community.  The music selected must be between 1920 and 1980.  I don’t want to see music created after 1980.  You will provide me with YouTube links for all the music and in 2-well developed paragraphs you will discuss how the songs you chose speak to the African American movement and the Chicana/o/x movement.  You will have one well-developed paragraph focused on the African American community and one well-developed paragraph focused on the Chicana/o/x movement.
Part THREE (20 points):  The History and Experience also brings us together!
In this third part, I want you, using your course notes (THIS IS A MUST), sources presented in class (e.g., textbook/s, videos, primary sources), to discuss the connections between the African American experience and the Chicana/o/x experience.  In doing so, I’m asking that you provide 2 well-developed paragraphs addressing the connections.  I want you to think about this very carefully because although there are differences, I’m asking for you to think about the similarities and connections. Also, don’t forget that you MUST quote/cite from sources as we’ve been doing throughout the semester.
(Hortua Lecture, xx-xx-2024), (Hortua Slides, Module X), (Desmond, pg. XX) etc. etc. etc.
Conclusions  (10 points):  Bring it together!
In the conclusions, I’m asking you to provide ONE well-developed paragraph providing discussion on Parts 1, 2, and 3.   I want you to link the three sections and argue how the music and experience speaks against the representations that you’ve researched.
You will submit this in PDF or Word format only. No other formats accepted.
The paper must be submitted via CANVAS (which has the Turnitin function operating)
Late papers will not be accepted for this assignment (automatic zero)
