Literary Research Paper Assignment
Your literary research paper must contain:
* an arguable thesis about some aspect of The Awakening.
* employ and demonstrate close reading as a means of supporting your argument
* employ scholarly (peer-reviewed) sources as a means of supporting your thesis (argument). A minimum of three scholarly sources will be required.
Topics
You should try to make your topic a new and creative analysis of some aspect of The Awakening. Some suggested topics can be found on this hand-out. These topics are only suggestions.  Writing this paper will be much easier if you identify a topic for which you have a genuine interest.  It will also be much easier if you read the novel!
Your central argument should offer a new understanding of the text. It does not have to be an earthshattering, life-changing realization – the ideal paper will propose a new way of reading some portion of a text, and in doing so offer new insight into the text as a whole.
Your primary support for your argument will be your close reading of the text itself.
Your secondary support for your argument will come through your use of scholarly sources (see below).
Supporting Your Argument
Your argument must be supported by:
1. Close reading and textual analysis.
2. The scholarly sources that you use will support your claim, but will not make your argument for you. Remember, scholarly texts are peer-reviewed journals.  They are not newspapers or mass market paperbacks, and certainly not web sources or people online. You may find sources to back certain aspects of your claim, or provide background for your argument, or disagree with your claim about the text. (Three scholarly sources are the minimum.)
Format Requirements
The paper should be a minimum of 1500 words.  As always, standard font (Times New Roman 12), double-spaced, one-inch margins. Your paper must have an interesting and illuminating title.
Your paper must include a separate Works Cited page consistent with MLA format which does not count as part of the page length requirements.
