In chapter 4, Schultz discusses gender and sport. She specifically discusses rule differences in sports and how they reflected gendered differences in sport. She cites numerous examples from the history of sport.
A number of sports have different rules for men and women, and they are “gendered” when the differences relate to dominant ideas about masculinity and femininity (p. 44).
She cites numerous examples from the history of sport that shows how sports developed in very different ways for women compared to men since the late 1800s in the United States.
Task: After completing the Unit 3 reading, conduct research on sports that were played at the high school that you attended. Pick 3 sports that were played both by the girls and boys at the high school that you attended. After picking the sports, conduct some research on the rules of those sports. You can conduct an internet search of the rules of the sports in which you chose. Cite any website that you use to respond to the questions. You may use an official interscholastic sport website. For example, if you attended high school in California, you can look at the California Interscholastic Federation Website https://www.cifstate.org/landing/index
Rules may be behind a paywall. However, you should be able to complete the assignment without purchasing any rule book. Please let me know if you are having trouble.
In a Word doc, list the following information:
List the three sports that you chose
What website(s) did you use to conduct you research?
Write 250-300 that responds to the following:
What were the similarities in rules for girls and boys for the chosen sports?
What were the differences in rules for girls and boys for the chosen sports?
How are these differences gendered?
***For the strongest score, situate your findings in relation to Schultz’s arguments in the course text.*
