I am writing this reflection based on
my perspective. I am the first speaker in the headscarf. I have to answer the
following 4 questions and it is about a ¾ page length each.
1.
Assess your abilities in the role of the Counsellor during your
roleplay. Provide 3 concrete examples (in quotations) of your questions from
the role play and explain why you asked these questions (the reasoning behind
them).  The person who played the role of the client will describe what
that experience was like. (Everyone)
2.
Identify
an area in which you feel you would like to improve and why you think
improvement is needed.
3.
Identify which interventions from the course learnings (at least
2 interventions) you attempted and why you chose these interventions.  (Sarah,
Malhia, Shannon – 1 each)
(Examples: reflective statements, focusing, psychoeducation)
4.
Identify at least 3 skills you used, explain what you did, if it
went well, and ways in which you could improve the use of this skill moving
forward.  Give specific examples and direct quotations of what you said. (Sarah,
Malhia, Shannon – 1 each)
(Examples: affirmations, use of open-ended vs. closed ended questions,
evoking change talk, non-verbal cues, summarizing etc.)
A note on therapeutic interventions vs. skills
Interventions – are any tools that you use in a counselling session to
address the client’s concerns or help to achieve the client’s goal. Therapeutic
intervention can take several forms (actions or practices that improve the
psychological, social, or emotional well-being of another person):
appropriate
use of silence
rephrasing
or paraphrasing
reflection
summarizing
acknowledgement
the Miracle Question is a powerful way for therapists to help their
clients understand what they need on a deeper level.
open-ended
questions
Therapeutic interventions are the techniques that are used within
a modality, it’s the pieces (listed above) that make up the intervention. The
intervention may be 12 sessions of CBT; however, how do you demonstrate that
you’re “doing” CBT? Is it that you’re using certain reflective questions, is
that you’re providing psychoeducation on the presenting concerns, is it that
you’re using reflection and summarizing to get to the core belief, is it that
you’re giving certain homework?
The skill portion is understanding when to use each of these
interventions, for example, when is silence appropriate? When do you need to
use open-ended vs. close-ended? For example, when working with children, it may
be better to use close-ended question because open-ended questions may be too
difficult for children to answer or understand. It is a skill to know when
to use the different type of intervention to maximum benefit.
Providing and Receiving Feedback: When offering feedback to your peers,
it’s important to maintain respect, focus on the specific skills demonstrated
rather than the individual, be specific in your observations, and highlight
both strengths and areas for improvement. Receiving feedback is a crucial part
of professional development, so try to stay receptive and avoid being
defensive.
Note on Sensitive Content: Be aware that the content in the role-play
presentations might be of a sensitive nature and could evoke a range of
emotions and thoughts. The material may resonate more deeply with some
individuals. It’s advised to use grounding strategies, lean on your support
networks, and support each other within your group. If you require additional
assistance, please feel free to contact your Professor, who can guide you in
accessing counselling services
