In the documentary, pay close attention to the section about cultural values and their overall affect. Then respond to these points for your assignment:
1.Two types of values: Intrinsic and Extrinsic Values — In your own words, explain these values and give examples of each
2. When Belic examines Tokyo, Japan, what does he teach us?
– Identify what the cultural expectation is and what type of value is it? How does that particular value affect the Japanese people?
3. When Belic examines Bhutan, what does he teach us about that culture?
– What cultural role does the government play – What kind of value system are they creating? What is their goal for the people of Bhutan?
4. When Belic examines Denmark, what does he teach us about that culture?
– Identify the established values within the people of Denmark? How do we perceive the people within this culture?
5. When considering all three examples, which cultures are the happiest? What value system governs the people? What does Belic teach us about values and cultural happiness?
6. Now apply what you learned to American culture. What kinds of values do we (as a culture) hold? What values are most prominent? Just as the film used examples, I would like you to respond with an examination of American values, using examples to illustrate your point (not examples from the film, but examples of what you see going on around you).
Hint: We often hear about the mental health crisis, we are a culture riddled with anxiety and depressive disorders, drugs and alcohol abuse are at crisis levels as are the consequences in the way of eating disorders, self-harming, and suicide. Something is wrong, and in this research assignment we are examining what is feeding all of these crises and how our cultural values and expectations are taking a toll on us.
