LESSON PLANS ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
From your role as a reading specialist or a curriculum and instruction specialist, you will develop
two model lesson plans for novice teachers. You will use the district lesson plan template
provided. After completing the template, you will write a rationale for the model lesson plan.
The first Lesson Plan: Small Group and Individual Phonics Assignment is a small
group/individual lesson for struggling readers in the primary grades. This lesson must have an
emphasis on phonics or phonemic awareness. The lesson must incorporate a narrative text and
digital resources. The rationale for this Lesson Plan should answer the following questions:
1. How will the proposed lesson help struggling readers with phonics or phonemic
awareness?
2. How does the proposed lesson provide scaffolding for at-risk readers?
3. How is the proposed lesson appropriate for primary students?
4. How did you use foundational knowledge of effective reading instruction to guide
instructional decisions?
5. What challenges might a novice teacher face when teaching this lesson? How could you
as a reading specialist or curriculum and instruction specialist support the novice teacher
in experiencing success with this lesson?
6. How could you provide opportunities for student choice with a variety of print and digital
materials within this lesson or as an extension to the lesson?
The second Lesson Plan: Whole Class Comprehension Assignment is a whole group lesson
for diverse learners in the upper elementary grades. This lesson must have an emphasis on
comprehension. The lesson must incorporate an informational text and digital resources. The
rationale for this Lesson Plan should answer the following questions:
1. How will the proposed lesson help the entire class with comprehension of informational
text?
2. How is the proposed lesson appropriate for diverse learners?
3. What foundational theories about diverse learners or culturally responsive teaching
support your lesson?
4. How is the proposed lesson appropriate for upper elementary students?
5. How might you support a novice teacher with integrating digital technologies in this
lesson in a safe and appropriate way?
6. Why is it important for teachers to understand themselves and others as cultural beings
through their pedagogy?
All materials and/or resources should be attached and submitted with the lesson plan.
Please follow the sentence length requirements within the lesson plan template. The rationale
should be a minimum of 250 words and should include at least 2 scholarly references.
