Length: 1750 words/ (30%) – NB: this does not include the reference list/ bibliography
This assessment is intended to let you reflect on how to design and apply some of the core principles of qualitative research we’ve discussed in the first few weeks of the unit. The purpose of this is not necessarily to get things ‘right’ (i.e. a successful and flawlessly executed research study), but rather to think about and reflect on how to apply the knowledge gained in creative and appropriate ways.
Draft a research design which encompasses the topics covered thus far in the semester. You can choose the subject of your research yourself, and I am not placing any limits on it, other than that it must be researchable using qualitative methods. Your assessment must consist of four different sections:
A: Research topic and research questions (approx. 300 words)
In this section you must define the research topic and research questions you will be asking and answering in your proposed research. This section must clearly articulate the topic AND the research questions you will be asking. I strongly suggest choosing a research topic you have some familiarity with. You must include two scholarly references in this section that are not in the readings list that are relevant to your topic and approach.
B: Why qualitative methods? (approx. 400 words)
Here, you need to explain why qualitative methods are an appropriate methodology and how their underlying philosophy will support you answering the question. This section must include 2-3 references which support your case. These may be drawn from the unit of study reading list and should include peer-reviewed academic journal articles.
C: Ethical considerations (approx. 400 words)
What are the main ethical issues likely to arise as a result of conducting your research? You need to identify at least two ethical issues. This section must include at least two references.
D: Reflexivity (approx. 400 words)
What is reflexivity, and what aspects of yourself do you need to be mindful of if you were you to conduct this research? This section must include at least two references.
Referencing is compulsory. Please use APA referencing style.
