Learning Goal:
This assignment asks you to critically analyze the narrative and thematic concerns in an iconic work of art, the film Citizen Kane. You will articulate how the narrative form creates meaning in the film. Question #4 asks that you reference vocabulary from this week’s reading; put the vocabulary terms you use from the reading in bold so I can clearly see them. This assignment requires you to synthesize the material from the assigned reading and viewing in your own writing.
All assignments automatically go through AI detection scanning when you upload your work. If the system detected that the work has not been written in your own words you risk getting zero points for the assignment. This includes having ChatGPT/AI rewrite/reword you work. This is cheating, I don’t tolerate cheating in my class and will report any incidents to the Dean of Student Affairs for violating the Honor Code.
Answer the following:
Discuss at least two ways in which Citizen Kane’s narrative adheres to conventions of classical Hollywood narrative and some of the ways in which it departs from that tradition. (5 points)
Discuss at least two examples of events that are part of the story in Citizen Kane’s, but not the plot. (5 points)
Be as specific as you can in giving examples of manipulations of temporal order, duration, and frequency in the film. (10 points)
Use a minimum of three new vocabulary terms from this week’s assigned reading in your textbook. Put the new vocabulary in bold. (5 points)
Click here: Before you turn in your Screening Report, go through this checklist!
This is a reminder for the things to check for before turning in your first written assignment. These rules apply to all future written assignments as well:
1- MOVIE TITLES: Movie titles go in italics, never in quotes. The first letter of each word is capitalized. Ex) Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, The Dark Knight, Spiderman, Poor Things
2- CHECK YOUR WORK: Spell check and proof read your work before turning in; look for grammar errors, spelling errors, punctuation, etc.
3- DO NOT USE AI WRITING: Do not plagiarize. Everything you submit automatically goes through software in Canvas that checks for both AI writing and anything copied from the internet. Cheating will result in getting 0 points for the assignment, the second time it happens it will be reported to the Dean of Students and you will be asked to leave the class.
4- LENGTH: If the assignment guidelines say “2 pages double spaced”, it needs to be 2 full pages. One and a half pages will not give you full credit. Make sure to meet the required page length for the assignment or you will not get all the points.
5- READ DIRECTIONS: Don’t just start randomly writing your thoughts about the film. Read the questions I asked and answer them giving as much detail from the film as possible (what you observed).
6- VOCABULARY FROM TEXTBOOK: The textbook reading has new vocab concepts in italics, these should be terms you recognize from the lessons in the Module. You will put at least 3 of those words in bold and use them in a way that shows you understand their meaning. Make sure you are using vocab from the correct chapter as indicated in the guidelines.
7- MARGINS & SPACING: Do not mess with the margins to try and make your assignment longer, and everything should be double spaced. I can immediately tell when the formatting has been messed with, so please do not do this.
8- DO NOT WRITE DATE/CLASS NUMBER/MY NAME, ETC: If I ask for 1 page of written work and the tp 1/3 of the page is full of details like the date/my name/class number/etc, then you have not met the length requirement. Do not put any of this information on the assignment, ONLY YOUR NAME. This is space that needs to be for your actual writing. Do not retype the question into your answer either. This is not a paper, you do not need a thesis. If you want to answer the questions by number that’s fine too, just make sure you meet the length requirement. Always be specific with things you saw in the film in your analysis.

General writing assignment guidelines:
Your response should be at least 2 pages, double spaced, 12 point font (do not include the date, my name, the class number, etc.).
Attach your response as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf to submit the assignment.
Write in your own words (the assignments will go through SimCheck, a service that detects plagiarism).
Your reflection should address topics below. They should not be merely a rehash of the movie’s plot. This is your chance to discuss your observations, reactions and insight about the film.
All assignments must be free of spelling and grammatical errors. Reports will be marked down if they don’t meet page length requirements.
Movie titles go in italics (not quotes, not bold)
No late reports will be accepted.
The Rubric for how the points will be distributed is included below.
