*** Exploring Social Justice and Health Outcomes Through Photovoice
Before this assignment, I have never delved into the realm of using photography as a means of research (which is shocking considering photography is one of my favorite hobbies). However, this project has opened my eyes to the power of visual storytelling in capturing and reflecting on the concerns prevalent in communities across Arkansas. Through the lens of my camera, I was able to document the realities faced by individuals and groups, shedding light on issues that often remain hidden from plain sight. One of the most enlightening aspects of this assignment was the opportunity to engage in group discussion, where we shared our insights and knowledge about pressing and societal issues. Through these conversatings, two overarching themes emerged: Social Justice and Health Outcomes.
Social Justice: This theme embodies the concept of fairness and equity in the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society. It revolves around the recognition and protection of individuals’ rights, aiming for a balanced and just society.
Health Outcomes: On the other hand, the theme of Health Outcomes encompasses everthing related to physical and psychological well-being, encompassing not only the ength but also the quality of life.
Under each of these themes, I employed three distinct codes to further dissect and analyze the issues at hand:
Social Justice Codes:
Racism: This code delves into the pervasive issues of prejudice, discrimination, and antagonism faced by marginalized racial or ethnic groups.
Inequity: Inequity represents the lack of fairness or justice within society, highlighting disparities in access to resources and opportunities.
Access: Access refers to the availability and accessibility of essential services, such as healthcare and education.
Health Outcomes Codes:
Chronic Diseases: Chronic diseases represent a significant burden on individuals and communities, often exacerbated by social determinants of health.
Health Literacy: Health literacy plays a cruciall role in empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health.
Overall Health: Finally, overall health encompasses the holistic well-being of individuals, encompassing physical, mental, and social dimensions.
In conclusion, this photovoice assignment has been a transformative journey, allowing us to not only document the challenges faced by communities but also advocate for meaningful change. By harnessing the power of photography, I hope to amplify the voices of those marginalized and contribute to the ongoing pursuit of social justice and equitable health outcomes.
