Part I: Write a military report to your commander from the perspective of a Union or Confederacy officer following either the Battle of Shiloh, or the Battle of Antietam.
Discuss events that led up to the battle.
Identify military strategies used in your battle, and the challenges (supplies, terrain, weather, leadership, numbers, etc.) faced by both sides.
Name the primary leaders of both sides, and discuss their actions and decisions before and during the battle (education, military training, military careers, etc.).
Describe the battle identifying dates, tactics, innovations (weapons, etc.), successes, failures, outcomes, including casualties, and what your men have experienced.
Provide your opinion as an officer of what the aftermath might be for your side (morale, momentum, ending the war quicker, etc.).
Since this is a first-person narrative (I, me, us, them, we, etc.) assignment, you would not be using sources or citations. APA should not be attempted. Part I is a military report addressed to your side’s commanding general, written immediately following the battle. Stay in character; remember that you are a Union or Confederate officer at the battle.
Part II: Write an entry in your personal diary, comparing your experiences as an officer during the Civil War to your great grandfather’s experience as an officer during the Revolutionary War (a major battle, challenges, equipment, weapons, innovations, leaders, etc.).
This is also a first-person narrative (I, me, us, them, we, etc.) assignment, so you would not be using sources or citations. APA should not be attempted. Part II is a diary entry addressed to yourself written after the Battle of Shiloh, or the Battle of Antietam. Stay in character; remember that you are a Union or Confederate officer at the battle.
Your response must be at least 500 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.
