ISLAND 13 DIARY
INTRO
Hey, there!
Have you ever jotted down a few lines during your travel in the past? Have you ever reflected about the place where you visited and locked down some memorable moments in a picture or a paragraph? Have you ever rambled about something exciting, unique, etc. with your friends who responded with another layer of insights that made both of you feel so good?
In this course, we are taking a journey to the world of abnormal psychology. Each week, you visit an island of abnormal psychology on a specific chapter or topic. You warm up first, explore the stuff with core and additional reading, and assess your understanding of the topics with quizzes, or exams, or discussion or a combination of them. And then, It’s time for you to leave for the next island/week of exploration for another chapter on abnormal psychology. Before your departure, from Island/Week 2 to Island/Week 15 (except Island/Week 10), you have the opportunity to write a journey diary on the discussion board per week with an original and a response post.
After this diary assignment, you should gain more applied understanding with real-world connection about different types of substance use disorders and gambling disorders in terms of their symptoms, contributing factors, and treatment options.
REQUIREMENTS
You may earn 5 journey diary grade points per island, with your final journey diary grade comprised of your grades for the highest diary grades at SIX islands (5 points x 6 islands = 30 points, total) out of 13 islands between Island 2 and Island 15. This means, six diaries with the highest grades will be kept for the final grades. Therefore, it is totally fine if you have no mood for a diary at certain islands between Island 2 and Island 15. No makeups or late participation is granted. You can have 7 islands to be absent or do as you wish for the journey diary!
The original diary entries should reflect relevant topics and content for that specific island/week as available from CANVAS and the textbook. You are welcome to bring in additional source for your entry. 1 point is taken away if the content is not relevant to the topics and content for the specific island/week.
The original diary entry should specify diary number (Diary 1=1st original diary; Diary 2=2nd original diary over the weeks), the number of the current Island/week, the date you post the entry which should correspond to the number of the current island/week, and your name. 1 point is taken away for an unspecified/mis-specified/under-specified original diary entry.
At least 4 sentences for the original diary entry. 1 point is taken away for an original diary entry less than 4 sentences.
The response post should extend the discussion with at least 2 sentences. 1 point is taken away for a response post less than 2 sentences.
The response post should also specify the diary response number (1=1st response post, 2=2nd response post etc. for that island). That means, you may respond to multiple people on a island with multiple response posts. The response post should also specify the number of Island/week, the date you post the response (which should correspond to the number of island/week), and the name of the person who you respond to. 1 point is taken away for an unspecified/mis-specified/under-specified diary response post.
You must post your original post first to see others’ posts.
EXAMPLES
Original diary entry example:
Diary 1, Island 2, 1/20, Feihong Wang
I finished reading Chapter 1 on looking at abnormality and watching the lecture video for this week. What intrigues me the most is the cultural variations in defining abnormality. I remember one time….
Diary response example:
Diary response 3, Island 5, 9/18
Hi, Rachel, your comments on the callous-unemotional traits in youth is quite thoughtful. But there is one point that I don’t quite agree though because…
Note that “3” in “Diary response 3” here  means your 3rd response post for Island 5 Diary assignment. If it is your 1st response post on this island, you put “Diary response 1”.  Please click the three dot on the top of the assignment and click “show rubric” for grading rubric details.
ISLAND 13 CONTENT:
