Through studying a book called “Criminal Justice Masterworks” by Panzarella and Vona, I understood that the book chronicles the evolution of thoughts regarding crime, legislation, police, and punishments. They have contextualized the Criminal Justice Masterworks literature by analyzing various facets of the legal system. The historical introduction focuses on the Enlightenment’s impact on society. A further dwelling into the book includes introductions from Beccaria, Lombroso, Shaw, and McKay, who were all excellent choices. The first chapter discusses the issues related to social regulation, the descriiption of the crime, and how the criminal justice system in the United States is the agency of last recourse that defends personal freedoms as an element of the law enforcement mission. Prevention, incapacity, punishment, rehabilitation, and restitution are all purposes of the criminal justice system (Panzarella & Vona, 2013). Aside from the criminal justice system, other forms of social regulation include the community, church, institutions, and the press. The chapter also defines crime as behavior that breaches social norms to the extent that it endangers its inhabitants or the general public. Certain crimes, including spying, endanger the peace and stability of a community. Lastly, it discusses the functions of law enforcement, courts, and prisons allocated variously throughout the municipal, statewide, and national government bodies.
