When we started this unit, we began with the assumption that “the self arises in communication and is a multidimensional process of internalizing and acting from social perspectives” (Wood 49). And we explored how “self-disclosure is a process between individuals in which selves are shared, shaped, negotiated, and altered” (Hargie 233). Now, I ask us to revisit these claims by asking: what does it mean for the self to arise in communication, and how could self-disclosure shape our relationships with others?To answer this question, use the case study: A Place for Connecting and Disclosing
In this report use our previous explorations about how identity and communication relate to draw your own conclusions through the following three sections:
Introduce your area: What theory of communication and identity are you going to explore (for instance, are you focusing on self-disclosure, particular or generalized others, something else)?
Analyze a case: Use the theory you chose to analyze how the self is communicated .What patterns do you see in the way communication gives rise to the self?
Discuss what your analysis suggests we can learn and/or do when communicating the self: Based on your discussion, what might we learn about interpersonal communication? What kinds of conclusions might we draw or what further questions might we want to investigate?
