Case Study:
Elisa is a 35-year-old undocumented immigrant. She is married with two children, ages 7 and 9. Elisa’s husband, Joe, works at a local farm and is rarely home. When Joe is home, he drinks heavily and becomes emotionally and physically abusive towards Elisa. Joe has also been verbally abusive to the children. Elisa recently sought assistance from a domestic violence program after Joe assaulted her during an argument about household bills. She would like to leave the marriage but has no place to stay. Elisa is financially dependent on Joe, speaks limited English, has no family in the area, and is unable to find work due to her immigration status.
