INTERVIEW QUESTIONS FOR PART OF PAPER # 2
This is a survey project on The Foreign Accent
It will be an example of Applied Linguistics
Interview 3-5 people who are L2 Speakers. Try to find people came here as teen-agers or older. You can interview yourself for one of your interviewees, but it is more interesting to trade with someone in the class.
Remember people who immigrated to a new country before the ages of 12-16 rarely have a foreign accent. Find older people to interview.
Make a separate page for each person interviewed and submit
List the responses to each question, with the number of the question
Ask each person all of the 10 questions.
You should have 10 answers for each person you interview.
The Interview Questions you will ask:
1. How old were you when you arrived in the US?
2. In general, what problems did your accent cause for you?
3. Problems in School? (Elementary, high school, or college)
4. Problems with other students and friends? (Being bullied?)
5. Problems at work?
6. Problems getting around the city?
7. Problems using the phone?
8. Can you give an example of an experience where you were treated badly because of your accent?
9. How did your accent affect your self-esteem, and your ideas about your educational potential and your future career prospects?
10. How do you feel about your accent now?
PART 2: THE L2 ACCENT
(3-6 PARAGRAPHS PLUS YOUR INTERVIEWS)
This part of your paper will be about the L2 Accent. The L2 Accent describes the kind of speech that a sequential bilingual might have because of the influence of the L1 (first language). It is more likely to happen with people who learn the L2 after puberty. Do not confuse this topic with local accents by native speakers, such as a Southern Accent, Texas accent, NY Accent, AAVE accent.
ONLY WRITE ABOUT THE L2 ACCENT (BILINGUALISM) AND NOT ABOUT ANY OTHER KIND OF ACCENT.
INTERVIEWS AND DISCUSSION (3-6 PARAGRAPHS PLUS YOUR INTERVIEWS
A. YOUR 3 INTERVIEWS WITH L2 SPEAKERS —10 questions for each paper.
B. SUMMARY OF THE ANSWERS IN YOUR INTERVIEW (1-2 PARAGRAPHS)
Write a summary of the results of your interview questions For example: Most of the people had problems with….Only one person had problems with….Two people decided…All of them changed their idea about their accent and said….
C. DISCUSSION OF ONE ANSWER BY THREE PEOPLE (1-2 PARAGRAPHS)
Pick one of the questions in your 3 interviews to discuss more completely State the question you are discussing and the question and summarize and discuss the answers of the 3 people.
D. DISCUSSION YOUR OWN IDEAS (1-2 PARAGRAPHS)
Discuss your thoughts about this research exercise. Have your ideas about the foreign accent changed? How do you think we can improve the experience of new bilinguals?
PART 3: A TOPIC TO DISCUSS
(6-12 PARAGRAPHS)
Pick any topic from the class that interests you and that you would like to discuss in more depth. Before you begin, submit your topic in Special Assignment F for feedback from your instructor. I have made a list of some potential topics in Blackboard, but if you have another idea, this is fine. Please check with me in Special Assignment F before you begin any research.
A. Describe the topic. You many use professor August’s materials for the description (1-2 paragraphs)
B. Find 3 outside sources that discuss the topic. Do not use Wikipedia or on-line sources from google. Use google scholar or the Hostos library for your sources. List the sources. (You may use one Youtube for one of your sources if it is relevant. If so, give the name of the Youtube plus the URL.)
The best way to find appropriate sources is to go the Library listed on the Hostos website, and type in your topic under ONESEARCH. If you don’t find enough, you may have to modify the words for the search. The other good way is to go to Google Scholar.com. Type in the name of your topic or a relevant search word. The readings on the right of the listing are free. If you see a reading that is not free, type the name into the library ONESEARCH as the library may have it for free.
C. List your 3 sources and give a summary of each of them—1-2 paragraphs each (total 3-6 paragraphs) General summary of the 3 sources—Do they agree or disagree? What interesting information did they present? What did you learn from the sources? (1-2 paragraphs)
D. Your own thoughts. Why did you pick this topic? What did you learn about bilingualism from this topic? Why do you think this topic is important. (1-2 paragraphs)
E. List of your sources
WHEN YOU PICK THE TOPIC PLEASE LET ME KNOW TO INFORM THE PROFESSOR.
Message : I attach the topics, choose one . im bilingual, I speak Spanish and English. I was studying french and living in Europe for 11 months. The interviews could be 3 people like me, mother and uncle, they both bilingual.
