Interview an individual or caregiver to gain an understanding of their ideology related to their health and wellness. Select an individual who is NOT related to you and is experiencing a chronic, disabling, or physical illness OR is the primary caregiver for such an individual OR who is an older adult. An individual over the age of 60 would be acceptable, as their life experience and wisdom would be helpful for this assignment. Unlike a biopsychosocial assessment, which focuses on a clinical assessment and case conceptualization, the ethnographic interview has a focus to understand and appreciate lived experiences and worldviews of the individual. The student is not the expert but the learner, so that the individual can educate the student about their lives and what has shaped them. The purpose of this assignment is to be present to the individual and allow them to discuss their health and wellness on their own terms. The guidelines below are suggestions to promote conversation and guide the discussion but are not necessarily headings for the paper .
· The meaning of wellness and illness in their life.
· What life experiences/events shaped their lives and ultimately impacted their health?
· What types of strategies have they have used to enhance their health and wellness over their life span to cope with aging and/or illness and/or what impact did their partner, family, or community have on them with regard to their health and wellness to support or undermine them?
· What do they want to accomplish in their life?
· Reflect on the interview. How successful were you? What impact did this experience have on you?
· What is the most compelling thing you learned from your interviewee?
Submit a five-page paper outlining the above factors and reflect upon how successful you were in obtaining the information you were seeking. Discuss the interview process itself and whether you were truly able to be present and learn from this individual. Discuss specifics of the interview process itself and how receptive the individual was to your engagement. Discuss the impact that this experience has had on you. Successful completion of this assignment will demonstrate that students will be able to utilize their interpersonal skills to learn from their clients in a culturally responsive manner.
