Instructions:
Throughout the semester, we will be exploring new technologies (specifically CRISPR) in genetic engineering that can be used to better provide healthcare and trying to eradicate and prevent certain diseases. Students should think about how genetic engineering can be utilized in the topics that are covered to better treat diseases.
Along with new technology comes ethical, socioeconomic, and political issues that should be considered and addressed. Do the benefits outweigh the risks to human rights and ethical principles in science? Can these new technologies be used as a political agenda for genocide or selective breeding?
As a final paper, students will write a well thought out essay supported by scientific evidence provided by journal articles and videos either presented in class or through the student’s own research. Students are strongly encouraged to do some light reading on their own to learn more about certain topics that may help understand and learn about the subject.
Final papers must be/have:
No longer than 5 pages (not including any figures, graphs, works cited page, or other supporting documents)
Double spaced
1- inch margins on all sides
In Times New Roman 12-point font
A minimum of 3 current (published after 2019) relevant references must be used to support the information written in the essay and proper citations must be used. Each department and major uses their own format for citations. Use the citation format preferred by your academic department.
“Relevant references” means that students are able to work the information into their writing in a way that it supports the writing and not just random information that is thrown into the paragraph for the sake of fulfilling the minimum reference requirement.
No direct quotes should be used in the essay. This means that the student must interpret the information and rewrite it in their own words to demonstrate understanding of the material.
Topic of the essay:
Genetic engineering: humankinds future or doom?
Questions that need to be answered within the essay:
How has genetic engineering technology evolved since its discovery until its more current application in healthcare and agriculture?
What are the benefits and downfalls of genetic engineering in agriculture and healthcare?
What are some examples of the misuse of genetic engineering technology?
What are the socioeconomic and political impacts of genetic engineering in the future of healthcare and reproduction that can broaden health inequality based on social determinants of health?
