Step 1: Compose a 1-2 Paragraph Introduction
In your post, respond to the following prompts.
Where are you taking this class from?
What are your interests or hobbies?
What else do you want the class to know about you?
What communities are you a part of (digital or otherwise)? These may be related to where you live, what you study, your hobbies, your profession, etc.
What technologies or social media platforms do you use to connect with your communities?
Step 2: List Potential Choices
To set yourself up for success on the profile project, you’ll need to select a suitable small business or nonprofit organization in one of your communities to profile. In the same post, underneath your introduction, list 2-3 small businesses or nonprofit organizations in your local community that you are interested in profiling.
Guidelines for Topic Selection
The business or organization does not need to have a physical location. An online business/organization is acceptable provided it has a direct impact on the local community where you currently live.
If you choose a business for your subject, note that franchises/national chains are not valid choices for this project. Keep your focus on smaller, truly local businesses. If you choose an organization for your subject, larger national organizations are valid for this project as long as they have a presence (like an office or chapter) in the local community that you will focus on.
For any business or organization you choose, ensure it is large enough to have the kind of public presence needed to complete this project.
Examples of suitable subjects for this project:
A comic book/gaming store
A nonprofit thrift store in your small town
A vegan bakery
A local nonprofit that runs a shelter for LGBTQ teens
Your local Planned Parenthood clinic
An online meditation group
Note: As you need to be able to remain objective, you cannot select a business or organization that you work at or own, or that is owned by a family member.
Step 3: Evaluate Potential Choices
Provide a single paragraph that discusses how each choice fits the requirements of the project and potential challenges of using this topic for the profile project.
