2) Do you agree or disagree with your group member’s recommendations? Why?
Here is my initial response:
1) Briefly outline your presentation. Be sure to consider age, type of violence, and amount of viewing time.
Parents, good evening. Tonight, I’ll talk about the study I did on how watching violent TV affects kids’ behavior. In particular, I’ll talk about the following:
a) Introduction:
• I’m going to talk about how common violent TV shows are and how easy it is for kids to get to them.
• I will talk about how kids’ behavior and growth might be affected by watching harmful media.
b) Age Considerations:
• Talk about how older kids and teens may be affected by seeing violent images over and over again, which can make them less sensitive and more likely to act aggressively.
c) Types of Violence:
• Tell the difference between violent cartoons or comedy and violent real-life movies and TV shows.
• Talk about the possible effects of different kinds of violence on children’s behavior and mental health.
• Instead of cartoon violence, I’ll watch shows that show real-life acts of violence against people, like hitting, fighting, and using weapons.
d) Amount of Viewing Time:
• Stress the importance of watching and controlling kids’ screen time, especially regarding harmful content.
2) Describe the recommendations you will make to the parents about allowing their children to watch violent television programming. Be specific.
I would tell parents of kids ages 3 to 7 to keep a close eye on the shows they let them watch and try to keep them from watching harmful material for more than two hours a day. Parents should watch dangerous shows with their kids to help them understand that what they see isn’t real and shouldn’t be imitated. When little kids need to have fun, it’s better to find activities encouraging them to work together, show understanding, and solve problems. You should also be a good example by not watching too much harmful material around kids. If every parent tries to follow these rules, it might help stop the rise in violence that happens when very young kids watch a lot of violent TV
MY GROUP MEMBERS RESPONSE THAT IT NEEDs TO BE COMPARED TO:
My presentation will give specific examples of children who have blamed their negative actions on scenes from television. Also, this presentation will show how television shows have no filter on them and if a child has access to the TV then they are at risk for gaining negative content. The age we will be targeting are middle school children who are still growing up and developing into their personalities. AT this age these children are old enough to watch television and understand the dialogue on the shows as well. The type of violence we will be focusing on is fighting because this is common on many shows in today’s society. The amount of viewing time focused for this presentation is over 4 hours a day.
I will recommend parents put a restriction on certain platforms that will block their children from viewing mature-rated shows or movies. They have these restrictions on Netflix, Hulu, Disney +, etc. Also, I will instruct the parents to limit their child’s television time to one show a day to promote healthier hobbies other than staying in the house watching TV.
