Instructions
One journal article has been assigned for Week 1. The summary is due by the end of the week (11:59 pm on Sunday (6/16)). All students are required to read and summarize the article while generating two questions for discussion about the article. The discussion questions may be used later for group discussion. Place the discussion questions at the end of your summary. Here are more detailed instructions about the article summary assignment:
(a) A summary of the article for Week 1 (check “Additional Reading”) is required (due by 11:59 pm on Sunday)
(b) Each summary should be 1-2 pages long, single-spaced. An MS Word format is required. No pdf format or picture formats are accepted
(c) Make sure to put your name and article references (bibliography) on top of the summary
References example (put the bibliography in the APA style as shown below):
Kovera, M. B., & McAuliff, B. D. (2000). The effects of peer review and evidence quality on judge evaluations of psychological science: Are judges effective gatekeepers? Journal of Applied Psychology, 85, 574-586
(d) Each summary should include the four sections of the article (intro, method, results, and discussion).
Introduction: Your summary of this section should include such items as the purpose of the study, research questions, literature review, hypotheses tested, etc.
Method: Your summary of this section should include such sections as participants, materials, procedure, major variables (independent and dependent)
Results: Your summary of this section should include the major findings of the study; you don’t have to provide statistical details but must describe key findings
Discussion: Your summary of this section should include a brief summary of the findings and the implications of the results. This section of your summary is separate from “discussion questions” you generate
(e) If an article has multiple studies (like Study 1 and Study 2), method and results sections for each study should be included in your summary. For instance, if an article has two studies, the structure of your summary should be as follows: Intro, Study 1-Method, Study 1-Results, Study 2-Method, Study 2- Results, General Discussion.
(f) At the end of your summary, provide two discussion questions (Do NOT create a new document just for the questions). If you failed to do so, you won’t get a full credit. The discussions questions are separate from your summary of the discussion (or general discussion) section and it does NOT replace your summary of the discussion section.
(g) The discussion questions may touch upon concepts/theories, methodological issues, data analysis, etc. When creating your questions, BE SPECIFIC!! Focus on a specific aspect of the article and raise a question on that. If you provide high quality questions you will get extra credits on your summary evaluation.
(h) The discussion questions may be used for group discussion (more instructions will follow next week)
(i) The summary should be submitted through the Brightspace ONLY (do NOT submit it by email)
(j) Students will need to use the MS Word file format; no pdf file format will be accepted
(k) If there is any indication of plagiarism, it will be thoroughly reviewed and investigated
(l) If an action of plagiarism is seriously suspected, no credit will be granted to such work
(m) A “zero tolerance” policy will be applied to any action of plagiarism; it will also be reported to the College
The instructions above will also be applied to the article summary assignments for the entire summer session I, unless otherwise indicated.
