Final Project: Case Study 1 – Student Development Over Time
Scenario/Context: Pretend that you are a 5th grade teacher and are examining some portfolio samples for your student. Let’s call the student “Joe.”
Part I: Analysis [15 points] – Review and analyze 4 work samples from one student (“Joe”) over a period of 4 years. These samples were collected in the fall of 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade. Explain writing strengths, weaknesses, and specific aspects of growth.
Part II: Data-Informed Planning [15 points] – Write about which skills and concepts in language arts you would address for further growth based on analyzing strengths, weaknesses, etc. It is the late fall of the 5th grade school year. Cite specific 5th grade Common Core language arts standards and/or state curriculum standards. What genre of writing/reading would you address first? Why? Which writing aspects (e.g., grammar, paragraph writing, vocabulary, punctuation, etc.) would you collectively address within the genre? Explain how you would teach an integrated reading/writing lesson to help progress Joe’s writing.
Part III: Lesson Plan [45 points] – Use the template below to create an original integrated reading/writing lesson to help Joe and other students like him progress with writing. Integrate children’s literature, technology, and other aspects from this course.
Part IV: Reflection [15 points] – Evaluate your analysis and integrated lesson plan. Reflect about strengths and potential of this lesson plan, how it would help Joe and other students, and what you learned from this case study project. Be specific and cite the body of literature with at least 5 in-text citations and at least 5 references.
