· Create a narrated presentation about the descriptive epidemiology of a health issue of your choice, in a geographic region of your choice. Examples:
o Descriptive epidemiology of COVID-19 in the United States
o Descriptive epidemiology of automobile-related fatalities globally
The presentation should include:
· [0.25 pt] Title slide- “Descriptive Epidemiology of Diabetes in the U.S”
· [0.75 pt] Health issue (Diabetics)- How is Diabetics defined? (1-2 slides)
Within your chosen geographic region (e.g. worldwide or specific country):
o [1.5 pts] Describe the overall frequency of the health issue (Diabetics) using a chart, table, or other graphic from the CDC and/or WHO. (1-2 slides)
o [1.5 pts] Describe the health issue (Diabetics) by 2 different “person” variables using a chart, table, or other graphic from the CDC and/or WHO. (2-3 slides)
o [1.5 pts] Describe the health issue (Diabetics) by 2 different “place” variables using a chart, table, or other graphic from the CDC and/or WHO. (2-3 slides)
o [1.5 pts] Describe the health issue by 2 different “time” variables using a chart, table, or other graphic from the CDC and/or WHO. (2-3 slides)
o [1 pt] Summarize the key points – 1 slide
· [1 pt] References- include links to all data sources. You can do this on individual slides or by creating a reference page at the end. Your references do not have to be formatted in a specific way. Just make sure the links work.
Additional instructions:
· You may use charts, tables, or other graphics from websites, as long as the data in the charts, tables, or graphics originally came from CDC or WHO.
· Narrate the presentation. Explain the charts, tables, graphics. Assume your audience isn’t knowledgeable about informatics or public health. E.g., If the slide shows an incidence rate, explain what that means.
· Each descriptive epidemiology slide should state who, when, and where. Although the graphic focuses on one type of variable (e.g., a person variable like race/ethnicity), it should still contain information about place and time. Example: Diabetes by Race/Ethnicity, United States, 2022.
· Include the most recent data available. Be careful about 2020 data, as the diagnosis and reporting of many conditions were affected by the covid lockdown. If 2020 data are the most recent available, you may opt to combine 2020 with previous years, as I did in the example presentation on lung cancer.
