Instructions: Write a 3 page, double-spaced persuasive essay about one of the following topics below. In a persuasive essay, writers must produce a clear thesis statement that is the conclusion of the argument presented in the essay. Think of your essay as one big argument that you are presenting to readers. In your argument, you must clarify the issue, present and underline a one-sentence thesis statement which is the last sentence in your introductory paragraph. In your second paragraph, you should define or clarify any issues that need clarification. Use an example if needed. If you believe the issues are clear enough, then identify the key premise(s) of your argument. Since this essay is short, you should focus on only one to three premises. Keep in mind each premise is a single sentence. The premises are the reasons to believe the thesis statement. Your paragraphs in the body of your essay should constitute a clarification and defense of your premises. In other words, you will offer reasons to believe the premises. In your concluding paragraph, you will summarize your essay. Your final sentences should admit the limitations of your study and/or leave the reader with questions that need to be addressed to further explore the issue. Ancient Greek Philosophy
Plato was not the only person who wrote about the trial of Socrates. Xenophon also has his version. Compare and contrast Plato’s and Xenophon’s version of the trial. There are several questions to raise. Were Socrates’ main arguments similar in both versions? How does Meletus come across in both accounts? Are there any important points or arguments present in one version but absent in the other? Develop a one-sentence thesis statement that captures your main point about these two versions of Socrates’ trial.
2. Many law schools claim to use the Socratic method to teach students. Clarify what is the Socratic method. Then, use the Socratic method in a conversation with a person and clarify what happens in that conversation. For example, you may ask a person to define truth, equity, justice, conspiracy theory, or some other concept you find interesting. What happened in the dialogue? Do you think progress was made in understanding the concept? Ultimately, do you think the Socratic method is a good way to learn about the concept about which you chose to write. Your response to this last statement makes for a good thesis statement. By the way, you may decide to inform the person about the assignment.
3. One aspect of the allegory of the cave that interests me is the possibility of mass deception. Compare and contrast how mass deception might have worked in ancient Athens to contemporary America (The United States of America). Develop a one-sentence thesis statement that captures your main point about mass deception and how truth might overcome mass deception.
