Instructions.
1. Go to: https://cdr.ffiec.gov/public/ManageFacsimiles.aspx
2. From the drop down menu choose Uniform Bank Performance Report (UBPR)
3. Pick a bank you are interested in researching. After that, write down the name of the bank under
Institution Name. After that click on Search. Note that you could get a bunch of different banks.
For example, for Bank of American you will get multiple different banks. Pay attention to the date
and the city and state listed on the results. Bank of America is headquartered in Charlotte, North
Carolina. It is the first bank on the list. You can Google or check Wikipedia to see where the bank
you chose is headquartered if you get multiple results and you aren’t sure which back you have to
select.
4. After you select the bank, on the next page, click on generate report. You don’t have to do anything
else on that page.
5. On the left side of the screen, you will see multiple tabs. You will only work with three. The
summary ratios, the Income Statement, and the Balance Sheet %
For each of these three tabs, you must do the following.
1. Summary ratios:
Once you click on this tab, you will get a page that lists ratios across various categories for your
bank and the peer group ( on the bottom of the page you can see the number of banks in the peer
group) for the last five years. Your job is to discuss how your bank has performed over the last five
years relative to the peer group. You need to discuss the performance of your bank relative to the
peer group over the last 5 years for at least 12 ratios (across the whole page) and at least one for
each group (Earnings and Profitability is 1 group, Margin Analysis is another group). In choosing
specific ratios, you want to focus on the ones where there is a significant difference in the
performance of your bank relative to the peer group.
2. Balance Sheet %
Repeat the analysis described under summary ratios. You have to do the same thing and you must
also analyze at least 12 ratios.
3. Income Statement $
Discuss the trends in the different interest income and expense items (either individual items or
the totals) and the changes in operating income, taxes, and net income. Here you have freedom
to choose what ratios to focus on (again items on the income statement with significant changes
(either positive or negative) are more interesting to talk about. You need to discuss at least 10
items on the income statement.
The purpose of this assignment is to give you a sneak peek of what regulators, competitors, investors,
creditors and other stakeholders regularly do to analyze the performance of different banks. I know that
you aren’t analysts and you won’t be required to provide “perfect” analysis. The purpose of this
assignment is to make you think like a stakeholder (someone who has a vested interest in understanding
how a particular banks is doing). As long as you show effort in completing this assignment, you can expect
to get full credit.
You can organize the report as follows:
Bank Name
Brief description of your bank.
1. Summary Ratios
1. Ratio 1 – Brief Discussion of the trend in the ratio over the last five years for your bank and
how it compares to the peer group.
2.
