Assignment: Discussion 6 – What is Photography?
1. Select a postmodern photograph from the module resources, include the link to the website where you located the image, and embed the image in your initial post. Then, discuss the following (MLA format / 200 – 275 words)
a. In what ways does the image challenge modernist notions of progress and photography as a mere matter of “writing with light”?
b. What advances in technology altered our conception of photography?
2. Give the photograph full citation /attribution info that’s known. That means photographer name, title of the photo, date, technology (e.g., daguerreotype, calotype, etc.), and direct URL link to the image’s online location. This is a good format to get in the habit of using:
Photographer Name. “Title of Work.” Date. Technology/Medium. Dimensions (if relevant). Name of the source where you found it. .
Example: Wright Morris. “Gano Grain Elevator.” 1940. Gelatin silver print. 13 15/16 in. × 10 15/16 in. Collection SFMOMA. https://www.sfmoma.org/artwork/83.71
3. Include at least 1-2 citations from the required readings and citations for any content you get from another source, whether words, ideas, or images. When in doubt…. cite your source! Direct quotes must be in quotation marks.
