April 16, 2024

In this speech, you will be giving a speech based on one of two prompts that you are given. You will create a speech in a short amount of time on a topic given to you. Be sure to narrow your topic and select supporting material that clearly supports and develops your thesis. You must also make sure your speech relates to the topic given to you. See rubric for full instructions.
You will have 1 minute to prepare a 3-4 minute speech. The main parts of the speech (introduction, body, and conclusion) should be identifiable. You should have 2-3 main points and each main point should be stated (previewed, signposted) and developed. For example, if you are given the prompt, “Is Mexican food better than Italian food?” you should answer this question (the answer being your “thesis”) and give three reasons to support your thesis.
You do not need to turn in an outline for this assignment, as it will all be made up on the spot!
To Submit Your Speech:
You will be submitting a video of your speech to this discussion board. Make sure to check out our speech video guidelines page to understand what your speech video should look like!
All speeches require an audience of at least two other people. See the speech video guidelines page for more info.
Seriously, go take a look at the speech video guidelines page for information about camera framing, lighting, and set-up.
Check out the Impromptu Speech demo videoLinks to an external site. to get an idea of what these speeches will look like.
Please disregard my mentions of meeting on (Confer)Zoom at specific times. These instructions were created for my synchronous classes. You will be pulling topics as described below. The rest of the instructions around speech structure, timings, etc. still apply.
Once you’re ready to present, open the Impromptu Speech Topic SelectorLinks to an external site.. This Google Sheet will randomly pull two topics from a list of possible topics. Follow the instructions at the top of the selector for your video.
Be sure to include your topic roll and preparation time in the video. If you are on Zoom with classmates, you can do this by sharing your screen to show the spreadsheet, then stopping the share to show you prepping for 1 minute.
Once you have your recording, upload and embed the video into your threadLinks to an external site. replying to this discussion board.

This week, let’s get ready to persuade!
Initial Reply
Pick one of the following specific purposes or use your own. Note that the topics listed here should only be used for the purposes of this activity. Topics used for your actual speeches need to be approved by me.
To persuade my audience that they should adopt, not shop when searching for a new pet.
To persuade my audience that they should not eat fast food.
To persuade my audience that they should exercise more.
To persuade my audience that they should reduce their use of plastics.
To persuade my audience to limit their ”screen-time.”
To persuade my audience that marijuana should be legalized on the federal level.
Choose the persuasive organizational pattern that you think fits that topic best! Remember that there isn’t necessarily a right or wrong answer, but please defend your choice!
Tell us how you might organize the speech using the pattern you’ve selected. Briefly describe what type of information you would put in each main point.
Peer Replies
In your responses to others, you can either agree with their pattern of choice or start a discussion on why you think another pattern may fit better.
