1) Structure. Remember to utilize the Thesis Sentence worksheet to create a detailed, strong thesis that is limited within itself. Include the three specific aspects of the topic you will discuss. Remember to include all the information asked for in the assignment instructions. Thoroughly examine each detail that you will discuss. Limit your thesis sentence to one sentence. Place it as the last sentence in the introductory paragraph. How did two authors in two eras craft their works to convey one theme? You should compare and contrast the tools of literature to clearly answer that question. See my comments on your thesis. Utilize the purposeful, five-paragraph format for academic compositions up to 1500 words. Make sure each body paragraph has one specific talking point. Be purposeful with your structure. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence that provides the idea of what will be discussed in the paragraph. Then conclude each paragraph with a sentence that summarizes the ideas within and also leads into the next paragraph.
2) Body paragraphs. Each body paragraph needs structure, and I have provided examples of that in the announcement, “The Five Paragraph Essay.” Use that example as a template. Utilize properly cited direct quotes from the research to support your discussion. You want to aim for three direct quotes per body paragraph in an essay this length. Remember to follow up every quote with a sentence that explains the quote and how it applies to the discussion point. Ensure that you provide the what, how, and why. Example (what), explain what the quote means (how it works), and why (why it supports your talking point and what it means in relation to your thesis). Cite all quotes correctly. Note that YOU provide the poignant, analytical talking points, and that quotes support YOU. You should include quotes from the primary sources to fully examine and compare them.
3) Make sure all explanations are well played out and thoughtful. Answer questions that you may invoke with the audience. If, as you read, you ask, “Why?” then the audience is also.
4) Double and triple-check grammar and spelling throughout. Work on correct comma usage, as well as punctuation with quotations, and using active voice rather than passive voice. You use passive voice throughout and this makes the paper a bit confusing and wordy. Make every word count. Use active voice, strong vocabulary words, and clear grammatical structure in sentences. Avoid referencing a vague audience (you, our, we, the reader, one).
5) Hook/Introduction. Begin all compositions with a fascinating quote, premise, or question. Engage emotion. Think of the Q’s: quote, quirk, or question. Use the introduction paragraph to provide plot summaries, the era definitions, and historical context. Here you need to provide all essential information needed to understand the discussion.
6) Conclusion. Use the conclusion to not only sum up, but use structure to do it — restate the thesis, and use one sentence to re-summarize each of the three talking points. Then end with a clear call to action — what do we do right now? Perhaps circle back to your hook. Wrap up the discussion in a purposeful and poignant manner.
