In this course, we will discuss what guides the policy priorities of members of Congress.
Throughout this course, we have also talked about why individuals choose to participate in
politics and how to be politically active. In this paper, you will practice one type of political
activity: writing a persuasive but respectful letter to a member of the U.S. House of
Representatives about a contemporary problem you want Congress to address.
Letter:
In this letter, choose a current member of the U.S. House of Representatives to write to, and
clearly state your opinion on a particular problem or policy that the House of Representatives
member has the ability to address. Explain why you are contacting the member of Congress and
why this is a problem that needs addressing. When providing information about your issue, be
sure to use (and cite) at least one outside source of information (e.g., polling, an academic
study, or policy brief about the topic).
How should the member of Congress address the particular problem you outline? In other
words, do they need to show more support for existing legislation (a bill already introduced in
Congress) to get it through the House of Representatives or introduce a new bill?
After the letter:
In one to two paragraphs, explain whether you think the member of Congress will take action
on the public policy you support. In other words, is the House member likely to favor legislation
addressing your policy issue or oppose it? Why is that? In explaining your answer, be sure to
refer to and cite concepts from the textbook. This section counts toward your 2-3 page limit.
Requirements:
– Use at least two sources:
o 1) one or more sources with background information/research on your issue
o 2) the textbook
– You may also want to use this bill tracker to see what legislation (if any) has been
introduced on your topic: https://www.congress.gov/search
– Properly cite your sources both in the text of your letter and at the end with a works
cited/bibliography page. You may choose which citation style guide to follow, but be
consistent.
Formatting:
– 2-3 pages (not including your bibliography), 12-point font, double spaced
– While you are not required to send the letter, format the letter properly with the
member of Congress’ official address. Address the member of the House of
Representatives professionally (for example, “Dear Representative Comer”).
