In this assignment, you will visit a museum and select an artwork to analyze and write about. The museum
closest to us is, of course, the Huntsville Museum of Art, but if you are going out of town and would like to
explore another option, that is completely fine.
STEP 1:
Choose a Museum to Visit. (If you cannot find a museum, check with your instructor to see if they
will allow you to visit a gallery or alternate venue.)
STEP 2:
Schedule a time to visit the Museum. Make sure you are allowing yourself enough time to
explore, research, and write your paper before the set deadline.
STEP 3:
Once inside the Museum, explore. Try to do a preliminary walkthrough so you will be aware of
the collections available and can focus your attention on the one that interests you the most.
STEP 4:
Choose a work of art to write about.
STEP 5:
If you are allowed, photograph the artwork. Make sure you ask permission first, and NO FLASH
PHOTOGRAPHY.
STEP 6:
Fill out the Fact Record included in this worksheet. This provides you with the information you
need to begin your paper.
STEP 7:
If you were unable to photograph your work of art, write down a description of the artwork.
Include everything you see. What is the subject? What are the colors? Is there texture? Describe
the piece in as much detail as you can.
STEP 8:
Fill out the areas of this form that are devoted to the elements and principles of design. You may
want to reacquaint yourself with the units on the Elements and Principles before you begin. You
might also find it helpful to take a second look at Module !.
STEP 9:
Go home and write your paper. Use the information you gathered on this worksheet to assist
you. PLEASE NOTE: THIS WORKSHEET IS NOT YOUR PAPER. IF YOU TURN THIS IN, IT WILL
NOT COUNT AS A WRITTEN PAPER. The requirements for your paper are contained in this
worksheet as well. Read over everything carefully.
STEP 10: Upload your finished paper using the Assignment Submission Link in Module III. 5 points extra
credit if you include a photo of the work.
