In the past few weeks, we’ve learned about environmental and biological risk and protective factors, some of the primary reasons for drug use and factors that contribute to, and prevent high-risk behaviors. For this assignment, you will use two screening tools to (1) observe and assess (2) analyze and evaluate, and (3) recommend healthy lifestyle for decreasing the risks of addictive behavior.
Step 1: Observe and Assess
Use the TAPS-1: Four-Item Screening ToolLinks to an external site. from the National Institutes of Health to screen and to assess substance use, and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)Links to an external site. which screens for depression. Administer these surveys to yourself or to anybody else. Then summarize the results in ½ page. These results should remain anonymous – use a word such as participant, patient, or client in referring to the person being assessed.
After you complete the assessments, you’ll see that results and suggested actions are provided. In Step 1 of the assignment you are summarizing the results of BOTH assessments. You’ll notice different risk levels for different substances such as cannabis, alcohol, sedatives, stimulants, tobacco, other drugs. Summarize here – include important information we need to know for the rest of the assessment
Step 2: Analyze & Evaluate
Provide analysis with the evaluation of the results. Apply your knowledge from the class and reading materials, include the identification and evaluation of the potential risk factors for drug abuse that may correspond to the results from the screening and assessment. During this process, be specific and apply the knowledge we’ve learned about reasons for drug use, theories of addiction, patterns of drug taking, and information from profile of the drug abuser . Write a summary in in ½ page.
For example, Are there Personality characteristics associated with the patient as indicated from the assessment, What type of substance are they using and perhaps there are reinforcers at play? Does it seem to be experimentation, or for pleasure? In chapter 1, we learned about the risk and protective factors – and whether an individual is more or less likely to abuse a drug. Based on the results, are there any Biological factors present that might be associated with use?
Step 3: Recommendations
Using what you’ve learned from Treatment, Prevention and Education and from the TAPS suggested actions, include suggestions and strategies on how the potential risks could be minimized or modified, suggestions can include nutrition, physical activity, stress management and how the changes could help the participant now and in the future. Be specific and apply the knowledge from previous chapters . Write recommendations in ½ page.
In chapter 16, we learned about the Levels of Drug Prevention and Preventing High-Risk Behavior – discuss what stage is most appropriate. And based on what you learned in chapter 15 about treatment, what might be a best form.
Please note that we are not clinicians – we are not providing medical advice. Should you administer and genuinely feel concerned about the results, you can refer to SAMHSA’s National Helpline – 1-800-662-4357: A confidential, free, 24/7 information service for individuals and family members facing mental and/or substance use disorders. This service provides referrals to local treatment facilities, support groups, and community-based organizations. Also available via text message: 435748 (HELP4U)
***a note: if you find in (1) observe and assess, that the participant does not have any risks – note that – and continue to follow step (2) analyze and evaluate: to write and justify why the person doesn’t have the risks based on the results and what we’ve learned from protective factors. Be specific and follow the guidelines. Under (3) recommend and write if the person should continue with a current lifestyle and if you suggest to anything additional to improve or to sustain and finish with writing the congratulation to the person.
