In the first module you were given a video and public domain article about the changing American family. Sociology is really a cool field that journalists and video makers find gives them all kinds of ways to share key findings. Often the public is exposed to sociological information without realizing that is what they are studying. It is useful for you as students to get familiar with how scholars in the fields write.
In this assignment, I have given you a book chapter on an overview of the family, a podcast and a peer-reviewed journal article. Read over both and give me your thoughts on what you learned.

A peer reviewed journal article is one that a researcher writes and submits to a journal for publication. Before the journal editor will agree to publish it, the editor sends it out to other scholars (or scholarly peers) to review it. The reviewers have to answer a bunch of questions about it, like did the author use good research methods, did they conduct their research in an ethical way using an appropriate design, did they cite the best literature review, and does their work make an important contribution to the field. This type of review assures that the material is trustworthy and of good quality. It is unlike a blog or personal article where people are giving their opinion. The internet now makes it possible for anyone to say anything, so from a consumer point of view, which are trusthworthy? This is why peer reviewed works are so important. They are sometimes a bit harder to read, but it is good for students to be familiar with this type of writing. FYI, when you do a Google search, you can search for Google Scholar articles and then you will get peer reviewed materials. Likewise, in the library if you search on EBSCO you will likely get peer reviewed ones as well. Learning how to be a good researcher to find quality works is important for you to learn.

Here is a National Public Radio podcast from an anthropologist who looks at why relationships are changing, and why family forms are changing so much. She gives new insights into why people stay together – and why it may be to the world’s genetic advantage to have relationships with many other people. It’s really fascinating – listen to it and then write into your essay what you learned and think of what Dr. Helen Fisher has to say!
